Project 15 A Sense of Proportion

For thiis project I went with two analogous color schemes, playing around with different filters and layer styles. I then mixed up the color pallet with more primary colors, again trying out different layer styles.

Project 14 Tesselations

Project 13 Knotwork, Celtic design..

The video for this project went into the description of celtic knots. I am of Scottish heritage myself and have always thought the patterns were so amazing especially for a people who had an oral tradition and most of their messages were sent through their own form of semiotics.

Project 12 Fractals: a Glimpse of Infinity

I really enjoyed this project as it gave me a better understanding of how shapes can be formed into more complex patterns. I have created patterns in Photoshop in the past and this was a reminder of how it's important to keep them bound to their own spaces as close as possible.

Project 11 Letterforms as a design element, radial symmetry, repetition, four pieces

Project 10 Gradients for space, light, depth

Project 9 The Cropped Letterform

Once again I find myself surprised at how a simple letter can turn into an interesting design. In this case I started with an S and before I realized it I had created a wonderful pinwheel design.

Project 7 Photographic Stamp

I googled the word "nature". I was hoping to get an organic image. I selected an image that is actually in the Wikipedia article for Nature Photography.

I used the threshold setting in Photoshop and cropped out a square. I am very pleased with the results. The 6x6 looks like it could be a sewn pattern on blanket.

Project 6 Positive/Negative Space

I chose a curved line for the first two examples. The second reminds me of the yin-yang symbol, a common one used to represent balance and symmetry. The third I used a common circle since it's it one that we cannot help but complete with our brains whenever we see it.

The next two yielded interesting results. I actually thought at first that I may have accidentally turned the images, but I quickly realized that the perceived slanting was just an optical illusion.

The final design actually makes the circle no more than part of a pattern. It stops being the "postive space" and becomes more like a simple texture.

Project 5 Rotation and Its many Permutations

I used Edwardian Script as well for this project, but I decided to go with the underused letter Z. I have always found that while it isn't the most popular letter, it's always depicted with the utmost flair in script format.

Project 4 Mirrored Tiles

Project 4 Mirrored Tiles

The different designs to me show how a simple shape can take form to more complex patterns. It also demonstrates how reversing the negative space can create an entirely different pattern with a whole new feel. I am reminded of how life is made up in a similar way of repeating cells that are identical but viewed from afar show us complex organ.

Project 3 The Grid as a Design Device

Project 3 The Grid as a Design Device

I didn’t realize until I created this how it was going to look. They created very organic shapes that seem to possess quite a bit of movement.

Project 2 Discovered Design

Project 2 Discovered Design

To me the most pleasing design is the larger circles in #4. The negative space to me looks very organic like the others, but I also like the balance of all of them being cut. Despite there not being a single completed circle in that design, you can still tell what the shape of each of them is.

Project 1 Basic Elements- Dots on a white background

My name is Michael Andes and I have been a graphic designer for over 10 years now. I started school when I was 28 and that was for Web Design. I began working in that field while still attending school and quickly realized that, while it was a valuable skill to know, it didn't satisfy my creativity the way that visual design does. I have been working at the company I am currently at for about 8 years. It is a text message marketing company based in Milford. My job is predominitely to design the visuals for our clients to get customers to opt into their SMS lists. I also update our website and create promotional materials to get new merchants, as well as educational materials to train our sales force. My job overall entails that I use a variety of Adobe products everyday. These include Illustrator, Photohsop, Indesign, Premiere Pro, and After Effects. I am hoping that when I finish my degree I can be more marketable in my field.

Welcome!

Welcome to Two Dimensional Design.  The class revolves around creating a portfolio of images in Adobe Photoshop  You can download a free trial of Photoshop at http://adobe.com/downloads…Sadly, the free trial is only good for 7 days and after that, Adobe rents the program to students for $9.99/month.  You can find Photoshop on eBay for sale with older versions, sometimes for very little money.  If you go that route, check with me so I can check it out for you.

Photoshop CS2 is available free when you create a login with Adobe.  Visit this link:https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs2-product-downloads.html?promoid=19SCDRQK#

If you have a Mac then you need to run this on an older operating system..."Mac OS X v.10.2.8–v.10.3.8, PowerPC® G4 or G5 processor"

Any PC will run this just fine and it has everything you need to complete this class... Adobe gives you a serial# that is permanent.

Photoshop is installed on all publicly available computers at Albertus...The Library, Rm 114 in the TAG center and 315 Aquinas Hall.

The first week will be about getting up to speed in creating your accounts and getting your software image editing program working.

We will also start small with the first project listed on the syllabus...

The Dot.

I host the syllabus on my website,http://jnevins.com.  Take a look around there to look at my teaching philosophy, syllabi, portfolios of my own work, tutorials and more...

Here is a link to the syllabus for this class:http://jnevins.com/twodimensionaldesignsyllabusonline.html

There you will find links to each project.

Important!.... click on the link In the email I had blogger send you it will be from Jerry (me)...  There are instruction on creating an account at blogger and joining the class blog... you don't need to create your own blog... just join the class one..  Here is a link to the blog:

We have five students in this class... put all of your work here on the blog.  No need to put work on fotothing.com, if you have seen reference to it in the syllabus.

Download and install your image editing program...

Look over past student work posted on the blogs, linked from the syllabus.

I want you to have fun with this class and not get hung up on any of the technical stuff...  Once you get rolling, you'll see it is fun and very engaging...
